Air Cadets Resume Training

Summer Camp Complete Success

HONOURS AND AWARDS WON BY CANADAIR SQUADRONS

With the advent of cool weather, it is time again to record the activities of the Canadair sponsored Air Cadet Squadrons. There is a great deal to record after their sojourn in summer camp. In the July issue of Canadair News it was reported that two boys from No. 588 (Canadair) Squadron had been awarded Flying scholarships. They were to take their training at Cartierville and everyone wished them the best of luck. Well they both passed with flying colours, Sgt. J. Gideon and Cpl. A. Conway soloed after seven hours of instruction, and they completed 32 hours of flying. These two boys have received their licenses and will get their wings at a later date, in an official ceremony.

There was a story about Sgt. P. Bromley who was to attend a Drill Instructors course. Bromley not only passed the course but was elected Captain of the Athletic Team. He was also a member of the Eastern Canada Tug-of-War team for which he was awarded a medal.

Flight Sergeant Raymond Baltins graduated from the Senior Leader's course at Camp Borden and won an award as an expert rifleman.

Ivan Manley Jr, who is also a Flight Sergeant in 588 was the lucky lad who went to Europe on the exchange visit. During his tour of Holland he was fortunate enough to meet His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard at Soestoijk. The Royal Dutch Air-Cadets, made him an honorary member of their association which permits him to wear the Silver Wings of that country.

Other than these special courses, seven officers and 32 cadets attended summer camp at Clinton, Ontario between August 14 and 27, during which time they placed high in all competitions.

The phenomenal success, of No. 588 Squadron, is due, without a doubt to their officers and civilian instructors, who are; Flight Lieutenant Eric Simms, officer commanding; Flying Officer Henry Johnson, adjutant; Flying Officer Harry Lynas, supply officer; and Civilian Instructors, Frank Green ; Cameron McDonald, Herbert Brean, James Sinton, Oscar Debuc and George O'Neill.

Regular parades have started again, and sons of employees are reminded that they too can become members of this progressive squadron by filling in the application form that appears on this page.
